Analysts: Windows 10 PCs with Snapdragon processor to dominate lower-end PC market

While the PC market sale is expected to decline, a new research claims Windows 10 PCs with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipset will dominate lower-end PC market. This is apparently the result of Microsoft’s aggressive push for Windows 10 on ARM adoption.

Earlier this month, Microsoft and Qualcomm unveiled the new Always Connected PCs, powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 chipset. Cristiano Amon, Executive Vice President, Qualcomm Technologies at Qualcomm’s Tech Summit announced the Snapdragon-powered PCs.

Always Connected Windows 10 PCs with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor is “expected to let ARM-powered models dominate the midsize and low-end PC market, leaving the high-end professional and gaming segments to x86-based processors,” according to Digitimes Research.

While nobody has been able to save the collapsing PC market, Windows 10 on ARM project is however expected to help the struggling PC market. Since Windows 10 ARM devices will be cheap, more and more users will plan to replace their entry-level models for ARM PCs. “The ARM-based processors can help PC makers reduce cost and sales prices to secure higher profitability,” research reveals. “This will inspire leading PC makers to roll out more devices with ARM-based processors.”

“Digitimes Research believes that computer devices with ARM-architecture processors may rival those with x86 processors in performance along with their growing technological maturity,” Chan-Han Lee writes.

Always Connected PCs with ARM processor has been optimized for long battery life and it can achieve one week of battery life per charge. Do you think the ARM-powered PCs will dominate lower-end PC market? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

  • Windows 10 on ARM is a very expected and very good move for PC.

Intel is a firm directly responsible for the PC market decline and was an entity who made significant damage to Windows and Microsoft. Intel have patents for x86 instructions set, Intel failed to deliver decent mobile-able x86 CPU and platform comparable to Qualcomm. So, Windows was for a very long time tightly connected to x86 architecture and was a hostage of Intel's inability to deliver a decent mobile hardware and apparent Intel's greed which prevented 3rd-party x86 mobile platforms to appear (same time Intel is failed to fill this x86 for mobile niche!). So because of Intel, Microsoft suffered for many years because of original Windows ecosystem was x86-based and as x86 (because of Intel) was irrelevant in mobile world, Microsoft was forced to develop Windows ecosystem on ARM from the ground up. And not only Microsoft for mobile suffered because of Intel. Laptops also suffered, because Intel CPUs made x86 laptops unsuitable for long lifetime on battery and Intel CPUs (even low-end) are too expensive for the low-end PC market and no much cheaper alternatives exists.

Intel/AMD duopoly and their greed in essence made PC market stagnating, their lack of innovations for years made x86 PC increasingly irrelevant to the modern computing world. And Microsoft as a company suffered huge losses because of Intel/AMD control over x86 architecture and their inability to adapt their hardware solutions for mobile.
